Ignite Studio at Hamilton East Public Library welcomes their next Maker-in-Residence, Boxx the Artist. Boxx kicks off her residency on May 6 and will be in Ignite Studio through August 12.

Here are five things to know about Boxx the Artist:

1. She’s a self-taught artist.

Boxx doesn’t have formal art training, rather she developed her artistic voice by experimenting and trying new things. She has been practicing art her entire life, and has been a full-time professional artist for three years. Boxx has expanded the realm of her creativity through integrating technology, intersecting acrylic with digital art.

2. She draws inspiration from the African diaspora and Black culture.

Boxx draws inspiration from her personal experiences, aspirations, and the world around her. Specifically from the culture and influential people. She finds inspiration from photography, so iconic photos or moments captured in history spark her creativity.

3. Her primary medium is acrylic paint on canvas.

Most of Boxx’s work is acrylic on canvas, but she also works in mixed media and digital art. Her favorite art tool is the palette knife. She says, “That’s the one tool I use to be creatively free when working on abstract pieces.”

4. She recently had artwork featured at the Indianapolis International Airport.

Her work “Universe” was selected for the Indianapolis Arts Council’s Swish Festival, which coincided with the NCAA Men Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament. Her art was on view at the Indianapolis International Airport for all to see!
